The aero engine, often referred to as the "heart of the airplane," is widely recognized as the "crown jewel of industry." On December 18, 2018, Tsinghua University founded the Institute for Aero Engine (IAE), marking a bold step toward shaping the future of aviation propulsion. Bringing together world-class expertise across multiple disciplines, IAE is dedicated to pioneering breakthrough theories, driving key technologies, and cultivating top talent for the future of aviation propulsion.
With the guiding mission to “embrace responsibility,” IAE has quickly become a focal point of attention and innovation. Backed by the full strength of Tsinghua University, the institute is charting a new path in scientific research—one that combines cutting-edge exploration with the distinctive character of a leading university in a new era.

—— Research Department of Combustion and Heat Transfer, focuses on the nation’s strategic needs in aero engines and gas turbines. Building on strengths in aerospace science, power engineering, and Engineering thermophysics, the department advances cutting-edge thermal science research and key technologies for advanced gas turbines, combined aerospace propulsion, and low-carbon aero engines. With a strong focus on combustion and heat transfer frontiers, it integrates fundamental research with engineering practice and actively engages in international and industry collaborations, driving innovation for the future of propulsion.
——Research Department of Aerodynamics and Controls,dedicated to advancing turbomachinery aerodynamic design, digital twins, intelligent control, and health management. It supports comprehensive multi-stage simulations—from individual components to full engine–airframe integration—and drives progress in core technologies for aero-engine system modeling.
