
Overview
Founded in 1926, Tsinghua University’s Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures (DFLL) boasts a storied tradition of cultivating master scholars and writers such as Qian Zhongshu, Cao Yu (Wan Jiabao), Ji Xianlin, Yang Jiang (Yang Jikang), Zhao Luorui, Wang Zuoliang, Xu Guozhang, Zhou Jueliang, Zha Liangzheng (Mu Dan), Li Funing, Xu Yuanchong, Wen Jieruo, Zong Pu (Feng Zhongpu), Ying Ruocheng, Jiang Fen, and so on. After a period of restructuring, it was officially restored in 1983. Today, the DFLL is a dynamic, forward-looking hub for advanced humanities research and education. It has moved beyond traditional language instruction to define itself through eight interdisciplinary research clusters, including: 1. Language, Mind and Cognition; 2. Language, Education and Application; 3. Language, Culture and Society; 4. Euro-American Literatures and Critical Theory; 5. Comparative Literature and Culture Studies; 6. East Asian Language and Culture; 7. Translation and Cross-cultural Studies; and 8. History of Literature, Thought and Civilization. Embracing Tsinghua's global strategy, the department collaborates with top universities worldwide and is committed to being more innovative, more international, and more humanities-oriented, bridging Eastern and Western thought for the 21st century.
Highlights
The Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures recruits MA and Ph.D. students doing research in the fields of linguistics, literatures, translation, and regional studies. In due time they will become strategic talents who are well equipped with the histories of different civilizations, participate in international dialogues and tell the stories of China, and ultimately interpret the world with a profound knowledge of the humanities and multilingual competence.
