Overview
The College of Artificial Intelligence at Tsinghua University was established in April 2024. It is commonly referred to as the College of AI, Tsinghua University, with the English abbreviation "CollegeAI." The college is led by Prof. Andrew Chi-Chih Yao, a recipient of the Turing Award, the highest honor in computer science, and an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The College of AI is committed to pioneering research in artificial intelligence and cultivating top talent, with the goal of achieving major innovative breakthroughs in AI core foundations, underlying architectures, and future computing models. It aims to become a world-class hub for gathering and nurturing leading AI talent.
Rooted in national strategic planning and leveraging Tsinghua's strong disciplinary foundation and comprehensive advantages, the College of AI will focus on foundational breakthroughs and interdisciplinary empowerment. The college primarily focuses on two key areas: "AI Core" and "AI+." The AI Core encompasses cutting-edge theories and efficient algorithms, embodied intelligence and multimodal perception, underlying architecture platforms, scientific intelligence and interdisciplinary applications, and future computing models (such as photonic and quantum computing). AI+ focuses on AI empowerment of other disciplines, including AI governance and safety, public health and medicine, intelligent vehicles and manufacturing, energy, and the environment.
In terms of scientific research, talent recruitment, and student cultivation, the College of AI will collaborate with other departments within the university and with partner institutions. It will systematically develop AI+ by organizing international forums, conferences, and salons to foster innovation and integration across disciplines. Additionally, by building vertical collaboration platforms and addressing major innovation needs at the municipal and national levels, the college aims to enhance students' application skills and facilitate the transfer of research outcomes. The College of AI is expected to elevate Tsinghua University to one of the most internationally influential centers in the field of artificial intelligence.
