Overview
The School of Safety Science, established in 2023, was initially recognized as the Institute of Safety Science and Technology within the Department of Engineering Physics. This multidisciplinary academic entity is dedicated to pioneering research in public safety, emphasizing a comprehensive range of scholarly inquiries. Core research areas encompass the scientific theory and methodologies related to disaster prevention, innovative technical solutions for disaster mitigation, emergency management systems, emergency response platforms, urban safety, and human protection strategies.
The school actively engages in the development of open platform systems and theoretical frameworks, along with technologically advanced systems for public safety research. It serves as the headquarters for the China Association of Public Safety and the Asia-Pacific Association for Public Science and Technology.
The School of Safety Science participates in several significant research initiatives, including the national strategic plan for science and technology development in the public safety sector, orchestrated by the Ministry of Science and Technology. It also contributes to the Ministry's public safety development plan and the major research plan on emergency management sponsored by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC). The institution houses the Beijing Key Laboratory for Comprehensive Emergency Sciences and a key laboratory designated by the State Administration of Work Safety for production safety studies.
Highlights
At the School of Safety Science, we focus on developing expertise across several critical areas of safety science. Each area is designed to address the current and emerging challenges in global safety and emergency management.
Our courses and research initiatives are designed to identify, analyze, and mitigate risks in various environments—from industrial workplaces to natural disaster zones. Students learn to use advanced analytical tools and techniques to predict potential hazards and develop strategies to protect individuals and communities.
Our focus on Monitoring, Early Warning, and Resilient Cities prepares students to design and implement sophisticated monitoring systems that can detect and respond to imminent threats. This field integrates technology with urban planning to create resilient infrastructures that can withstand and quickly recover from disasters.
The Integrated Emergency Technology and Management area offers a comprehensive view of the emergency management lifecycle, including preparedness, response, recovery, and mitigation. This program emphasizes the integration of technology and management practices to improve emergency response and disaster resilience.
Career Prospects
Graduates specializing in these areas are highly prepared for careers in government agencies, international organizations, private companies, and NGOs. They work as risk managers, safety engineers, urban planners, emergency managers, and consultants, among other roles. Their expertise contributes significantly to creating safer environments and enhancing community and organizational resilience.
