Overview
In 2024, the School of Basic Medical Sciences (BMS) was formally established, marking a new milestone in the development of Basic Medical Sciences at Tsinghua University. Since the founding of its predecessor, the Department of Basic Medical Sciences, in 2012, doctoral education in the field has been guided by Tsinghua University’s core educational philosophy—emphasizing value shaping, ability development, and knowledge transfer. The program is dedicated to cultivating talented individuals with strong expertise in basic medical research and a spirit of innovation. Currently, the School encompasses several distinctive disciplines, including: development and regeneration, tumor biology, immunology, pathogenic microorganisms and infectious diseases, medical biochemistry and genetics, and neurobiology and neurodegenerative diseases.
Highlights
—— In 2019, the program was officially approved as a doctoral degree program in basic medical sciences.
—— In 2022 and 2023, it received an A+ rating in basic medical sciences from the Times Higher Education China Subject Ratings.
—— In 2023, it was approved as a postdoctoral research station in basic medical sciences.
—— Four disciplines—immunology, pathogenic microbiology and infectious diseases, neuroscience, and molecular and cell biology—are ranked within the top 1% globally by the Essential Science Indicators (ESI).
—— The program played a key role in establishing two national key laboratories: the State Key Laboratory of Molecular Oncology and the National Key Laboratory of Difficult, Critical, and Rare Diseases.
—— Four specialized centers have been established: the Center for Immunobiology, Center for Cancer Biology, Center for Infection Biology, and Center for Regeneration, Aging, and Chronic Diseases.
