Overview

The Department of Industrial Engineering at Tsinghua University was established in 2001. It is the No. 1 program in Industrial Engineering in China. The mission of the department is “To become a world class leader in Industrial Engineering research and education, contribute to increase gross national productivity, increase quality of life, and increase the living standard in China and the world.”

Highlights

——According to the evaluation conducted by a panel formed by members of the United States National Academy of Engineering (NAE) in 2019, our graduate program is comparable to the top 20 industrial engineering programs in the United States.

——Dr. Gavriel Salvendy, Professor of Industrial Engineering at Purdue University and Member of the United States National Academy of Engineering, was our founding department head and was named chair Professor Emeritus in 2014. More than 80% of the faculty members have study or research experience in top universities in the United States or the European Union.

——The department has adopted a new paradigm of engineering education with an emphasis on creativity and practical training through innovative teaching, and rebuilt the curriculum in accordance with the standards of top industrial engineering programs; and

——The department hosts workshops annually, which build up the long-term international collaboration with top universities and Fortune 500 companies.

——The International joint program, Tsinghua-Aachen Double Master’s Degree Program, has been introduced since 2001, and the Tsinghua-Politecnico di Milano Double Master’s Degree Program was also initiated in 2017.

——A two-year, professional-orientated Master’s Program in Management Science and Engineering (previously known as the Master’s Program in Global Manufacturing) was introduced in 2009 for students with a global vision in Management Science and Engineering, with a special focus on the manufacturing industry in China.

——In 2017, the International Master of Engineering Management (IMEM) program was launched. IMEM Program is a 2-year professional Master 's degree program, which is designed to prepare engineers and technical specialists for technology leadership and industry management in global engineering projects.

——The department holds a series of Chinese culture related courses, as well as immersion class on Manufacturing in China, which will guide international students to learn more about China.

——The international graduate students account for more than 50% of all the full-time graduate students in the department of Industrial Engineering.
