Overview

  The School of Humanities of Tsinghua University has been in a pivotal in the wider academic history of the humanities in China. Notable experts such as Wang Guowei, Liang Qichao, Chen Yinque, Zhao Yuanren, Jin Yuelin and Qian Zhongshu, among others, once taught or studied at Tsinghua. The School of Humanities currently consists of the Department of Chinese Language and Literatures, the Department of Philosophy, the Department of History, the Department of the History of Science and the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures, each with a number of distinguishing scholars in those fields.

  From the year 2025 on, the Research and Conservation Center for Unearthed Texts (affiliated to School of Humanities) starts to admit MA and PhD applicants in Chinese Paleography.


Highlights

——The Department of Chinese Language and Literature has five main fields: Ancient Chinese Literature and Classic Chinese Philology;Modern and Contemporary Chinese Literature, Literary Theory and Comparative Literature with a global vision concerned with the present times; Linguistics and Applied Linguistics with a focus on computational linguistics and psycho-linguistics; Chinese Linguistics focusing on historical changes of both the Chinese language and its writing system; and Buddhist Philology (i.e. philological studies of Chinese, Tibetan and Indian Buddhist scriptures). Each of these fields is supported by the strength of the associated faculty members.

——The Department of Philosophy at Tsinghua University, as one of the two oldest departments of philosophy in China, together with that at Peking University share the honor of initiating a new tradition of humanities studies in the history of Chinese modern higher education and founding the educational genealogy of philosophy in China. Now it stands out with its vigorous and original young thinkers. Academic influence is seen in ethics, Chinese philosophy, western philosophy, Marxist philosophy, logic, religion and aesthetics. It offers broad and deep programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels in a lively and intellectually stimulating atmosphere.

——The Department of History excels in the following fields: study of archaeological literature and ancient Chinese civilization with a focus on “Tsinghua Bamboo Slips”, social and economic history, intellectual history, historic theory, and communication history between China and the West.

——The Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures recruits MA and Ph.D. students doing research in the fields of linguistics, literatures, translation,and regional studies. In due time they will become strategic talents who are well equipped with the histories of different civilizations, participate in international dialogues and tell the stories of China, and ultimately interpret the world with a profound knowledge of the humanities and multilingual competence.

——The Department of the History of Science aims at advancing the historical study of science at Tsinghua University in 3 major fields: history of Western science and technology; history of Chinese science and technology; philosophy of science and technology. The department offers programs and courses on undergraduate, master and Ph.D. levels, and plays an active role in the liberal arts education at Tsinghua University. The faculty members are committed to nurturing the best scholars with interdisciplinary visions and comprehensive education.

——The Tsinghua University Research and Conservation Center for Unearthed Texts is a teaching and research institution dedicated to the study of ancient Chinese writing, including oracle bone inscriptions, unearthed texts, and early Chinese history and culture. The center welcomes master's and doctoral applicants in Chinese Paleography worldwide. The program covers all aspects of ancient Chinese writing, including oracle bone inscriptions, bronze inscriptions, bamboo and silk manuscripts, as well as related studies of ancient Chinese civilization. We warmly welcome students from all countries who are interested in studying ancient Chinese writing, unearthed texts, and historical civilizations.
