The Department of Energy and Power Engineering was founded in 1932 and originally known as the Power Engineering Group of the Mechanical Engineering Department. The group became the Department of Power Machinery in 1952, the Department of Thermal Engineering in 1978 and was renamed the Department of Energy and Power Engineering in 2017.

Generations of great teachers have built our department into a renowned educational institute for thermofluid sciences, clean energy systems, advanced power systems, and efficient energy strategies, as well as an R&D base for fundamental scientific research and a world-class academic exchange center.

Our department includes five research institutes, Thermal Engineering, Engineering Thermophysics, Gas Turbines, Thermal Power Simulation and Control and Fluid Machinery and Engineering. The Combustion Energy Research Center of Tsinghua University is also affiliated with the department.

We have an excellent faculty who are exceptionally qualified and are influential in our field both domestically and overseas. 42 of the faculty are full professors, 41 are associate professors and 15 have professional certifications. The faculty includes 2 academicians of the CAE, 2 foreign academicians. More than 40 have won the title of National Talents. 3 have won Famous Teachers of Beijing.3 have won The Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation Award,2 have won Guanghua Engineering Award. Total 12 famous scholars at home and abroad are invited to serve as Double-appointed Professors, Honorary Professors, and Distinguished Visiting Professors.

We have established extensive connections through many cooperative projects with world-class universities, research institutes and energy companies throughout the world and have founded various research institutes which promote our international reputation and put us at the forefront of fundamental research and R&D of new technologies .
