Overview
Founded in 1970, the Department of Automation, Tsinghua University is fully responsible for the development of Tsinghua University’s first-level discipline in Control Science and Engineering. Control Science and Engineering, as a highly interdisciplinary and widely applicable field of study, plays a pivotal role in numerous key sectors, including national security, industrial manufacturing, modern services, life and healthcare sectors. In 1998, the Control Science and Engineering discipline at Tsinghua University was awarded the first batch of the pioneering programs in China authorized to confer doctorate degrees in the first-level disciplines. It was recognized as one of the national key first-level disciplines in 2007 and further acclaimed as one of the “Double First-Class” disciplines in 2017. For nearly two decades, it has consistently ranked first or received an A+ rankings in the Ministry of Education’s discipline evaluations.
Highlights
In recent years, the Department of Automation has strategically aligned its research endeavors with both national strategic needs and the frontiers of international academic research, concentrating its efforts around four key areas: Brain Intelligence and Machine Intelligence, Intelligent Unmanned Systems, Industrial Intelligence, and Intelligent Health & Bioinformatics. The Department has built disciplines in “Control Theory and Control Engineering”, “Pattern Recognition and Intelligent Systems”, “Systems Engineering”, “Detection Technology and Automation Devices”, “Navigation Guidance, and Control”, “Industrial Intelligence and Systems”, “Bioinformatics”, “Brain and Cognitive Sciences”. The Department’s achievements have significantly impacted national security, industrial manufacturing, modern services, energy, and the environmental sectors.
The Department of Automation has a long history and a strong faculty, including 4 academicians from the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering, over 30 recipients of national high-level talent programs, and 12 IEEE Fellows. Over the past decade, the department has published more than 1,000 papers in top international journals such as Nature, Science, T-PAMI, and T-AC. It has won over 10 national-level scientific and technological awards as the lead institution. The department has accumulated extensive technical expertise and research experience in areas such embodied intelligence and robotics, multimodal artificial intelligence, brain and cognitive science, and bioinformatics. The Department’s achievements have generated significant economic and societal benefits.
As human society is gradually entering the “Era of Intelligence”, the concept of “Intelligence+” has become a major driving force for the development of industries in China. The Department of Automation at Tsinghua University is vigorously developing control and intelligent technologies, aiming to build Tsinghua’s Control Science and Engineering discipline into an important base for cultivating elite talents in information processing and intelligent control. These technologies are being applied across various industries to play a more significant role in realizing the national strategy of innovation-driven development and promoting the rapid growth of the national economy.
